Description

South Greenland

South Greenland is often overlooked by visitors travelling to Greenland – and it is a real shame. The area has so many Arctic experiences to offer: From iceberg-filled fjords to dramatic glaciers, not to mention archaeological remains from the Inuit and Viking settlers.

Narsarsuaq

Narsarsuaq is the gateway to South Greenland. Meaning ‘great plain’ in Greenlandic, it is today the site of a small international airport.

Viking Country

Formerly a US airbase it is now a small settlement which is largely preoccupied working for the local tourism industry – primarily at the hotel and the airport. The area is offering a huge diversity of experiences from iceberg cruises, to hikes in a nearby valley or to the Inland Ice Cap. The area around Narsarsuaq is also Viking Country and there are numerous ancient remains from these first Europeans on the American continent.

Narsaq

Narsaq (meaning The Plain in Greenlandic) is a charming town known for its colourful wooden houses, where modern living is mixed with ancient traditions. It is the youngest town in Greenland, founded as late as in 1959.

Viking ruins

It is an area of great geological and historic interest; several interesting minerals can be found only a short hike from the town in the Kvanefjæld area as well as the Viking ruins of Dyrnæs and the Landnamsgård which are among the oldest Norsemen ruins found in South Greenland dating back to AD 1000.

Day 1

Air Greenland morning flight from Copenhagen Airport to Narsarsuaq where a guide will be waiting for you in the small airport. Transfer to the hotel for check-in and information meeting where you will be introduced to the Arctic Adventure guide team and hear more about the excursions available during your stay.

Around Narsarsuaq

Following the meeting your guide will take you on a walk around Narsarsuaq, so you can get acquainted with the area. Narsarsuaq is the gateway to South Greenland. Meaning ‘great plain’ in Greenlandic it is today the site of a small international airport. The area around Narsarsuaq has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status partly due to the many Viking ruins found in the region.

Discovering North America

Erik the Red was the Viking who settled in Greenland and gave the huge island its name. Remains of his farm Brattahild can be found across Erik’s Fjord from Narsarsuaq, which is also the site of the first Christian church built on the North American continent. It was from this tiny settlement, that his son Leif the Lucky sailed further west to discover America and set up the first European settlement on the North American mainland – some 500 years’ BEFORE a certain Mr Columbus.

Newborn icebergs

No visit to Greenland is complete without seeing a glacier up close, and in Narsarsuaq you can cruise among the icebergs to the fjord of Qooroq where the glacier of the same name is found. We go as close as we safely can and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ‘newborn’ icebergs. Tonight, you will celebrate your arrival with dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the pier and by boat through the ice-filled Erik’s Fjord to Narsaq, where our guide will meet you on the pier. Transfer to the hotel for check-in followed by an information meeting.

Around town

In the afternoon, your guide will take you on a walk of the small town. Narsaq (meaning The Plain in Greenlandic) is a charming town known for its colourful wooden houses, where modern living is mixed with ancient traditions. It is an area of great geological and historic interest; several interesting minerals can be found only a short hike from the town in the Kvanefjæld area as well as Viking ruins dating back to AD 1000.

Day 3, 4

Breakfast at the hotel. Days at leisure in Narsaq. The town of Narsaq offers most modern amenities from several schools, a hospital, an internet café and the recently opened Greenland Brew house – the first brewery in Greenland. Combine this with a visit to the traditional fish market where the local fishermen bring in their catch of fish and seals to be sold and you have unique Arctic experience!

Glacier cruise

Don’t miss the wonderful day trip to the Inland Icecap sailing through waters filled with icy sculptures before landing in front of the Twin Glaciers offering you the opportunity to walk right up to the glacier front and touch the ice!

Day 5

Breakfast at the hotel. Join our guides for farewell coffee and have a chat about your time in Greenland. Travel in style by helicopter flying in low altitude over the Arctic landscape to Narsarsuaq. NB! On certain days, if there is no helicopter availability, the transfer Narsaq-Narsarsuaq will be by boat! Alternatively, we will cruise through the ice-filled fjord system, giving you ample opportunity to marvel at the Arctic landscape and perhaps take a few more pictures of the icebergs floating by. Transfer to the hotel for check-in.

Day 6

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to airport for Air Iceland Connect flight from Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen.
