6 days on the most popular and scenic route to Mt. Kilimanjaro
Visiting 1 country: Tanzania
Kilimanjaro, an African icon that stands tall, piercing the Tanzanian skyline, overlooking glorious lands inhabited by the World’s most spectacular animals, and enticing you to conquer it… and that’s exactly what you’re about to do.
Pull on your boots and let’s get hiking as we take on Mount Kilimanjaro, scaling the giant from the popular Marangu route, sporting defined trails that make our journey far easier, and many mountain huts that’ll provide amenities to keep us marching to the summit. So what’re you waiting for? Let’s climb Kilimanjaro!
Day 1: Marangu Gate/Mandara Hut
Good morning you happy hikers! Who’s excited about conquering this big ol’ mountain? Let’s get some breakfast in us and transfer across from our starting point at Moshi to the Marangu Gate. Once there we’ll greet our guides and porters, and these lifesavers will give us a quick briefing on what to expect on our climb.
Our day will last between 3-5 hours and will be littered with excursions through rainforests that’ll captivate your spirit and sense of adventure. Let’s head on up to our accommodation for the evening at Mandala Hut (2743 m) before settling down for some well-deserved rest.
Day 2: Mandara Hut/Horombo Hut
After a bite for breakfast we set off on an ascent up through the alpine meadow, an incredibly beautiful area with remarkable flora, including the monstrous 3 metre high Giant Lobelia and the weird Giant Groundsel. As we progress up the mountain, we’ll be greeted by Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a sight that is truly incredible, it will propel your spirit. Eventually we’ll crash at Horombo Hut (3720 m) before we set out on another big day.
Day 3: Horombo Hut -Acclimatisation Day
Since we’re marching up Kilimanjaro, it’s expected that the altitude will kick in, so we’ll use today for acclimatisation to prepare our bodies for the final push. We will however still have a mini hike, that’ll aid our acclimatisation, towards the stripy stones of Zebra Rocks and onwards to the Mawenzi Hut, before traipsing back to Horombo for dinner and rest.
Day 4: Horombo Hut/Kibo Hut
Today we’ll set a much slower pace to give our bodies the best chance to strive forth. Gradually ascending towards Kibo Hut, our journey will lead us over rugged and rocky terrain that’ll be challenging, but so fulfilling once we’ve completed the 5 to 6 hour hike.
Day 5: Kibo Hut/Summit/Horombo Hut
Rise and shine at the rather odd time of pre-midnight, but it’s for good reason as we make the final push toward the summit of Kilimanjaro. Are you excited yet? Our breakfast will consist of tea and biscuits, and will set us up just right for the final ascent. A rocky, zigzagging terrain will form our path en route to Gillman’s Crater (5685 m). A quick breather here will coincide with us witnessing the first rays of light of a new day vividly coloring the mountains and skies. A glorious sight!
Departing Gillman’s, we are faced with mounds of the white stuff (snow) all the way up Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – the highest point in all of Africa. And in that moment, you’ve conquered Kilimanjaro. Excitement and joy flush through your soul, so relish this moment as you’re quite literally on top of the World. How brutal the weather conditions are will determine our length of stay at the peak. Immerse yourself in the moment and take those priceless photos…. Descending back to Kibo Hut is our next play, and we’ll get drinks and food there before heading further to Horombo Hut for dinner and sleep, which will be much needed after our 12 to 15 hour hike.
Day 6: Hormone Hut/Marangu Gate
Our final strides on Kilimanjaro will lead us back to Marangu Gate, where we bid the mountain farewell. A certificate of congratulations will be given to you stating your summit achievements, though the memories and stories alone could serve as your reward. From there we’ll transfer you back to Moshi.
What a week it’s been. Mount Kilimanjaro stood in our wake, a daunting prospect that we overcame on this marvelous, gratifying climb. Feeling like the Kings and Queens of Africa you can hold your head high for completing this fantastic achievement.
