Description

Iceland’s Golden Circle combined with Ilulissat; The Town of Icebergs.

Reykjavik (Iceland)

A true blend of the past and present. You will find all facilities of a metropolis as well as the warm friendliness of a small town.

This programme suits clients who do not want to change accommodation every day and like to have several options of evening restaurants and city facilities within close range.

Reykjavik is the ideal base for excursions to the most famous highlights of South Iceland:

  • The Blue Lagoon.
  • The majestic waterfall Gullfoss.
  • The Geysir area with erupting hot springs.
  • The National Park of Thingvellir; a historic site through centuries and a masterpiece of nature with a scenic lake and rifts which mark where the continental plates of Europe and America meet.

Ilulissat (Greenland)

Explore this modern Greenlandic town north of the Polar Circle and experience the unique Disko Bay:

Calving glaciers and gigantic icebergs: Majestic icebergs are situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord right outside the town and can be experienced at close range on our Midnight Cruises or during full day excursions where we cruise close to the impressive glacier of Eqip.

Isolated Settlements: On other excursions we sail to small and remote settlements, where “the old world” and the Greenlandic hunters still live much according to ancient traditions.

Day 1

Arrival to Keflavik International Airport. Transfer by FLYBUS to your hotel.

Day 2

On this adventure you will be enjoying a hearty breakfast at your hotel everyday before your day begins…

Today we will start with a morning city sightseeing of Reykjavik including the town of Hafnarfjordur where we briefly visit the Fish Market, the open-air museum Arbær, one of the outdoor swimming pools and the towering Hallgrim’s Church.  We also pass through the old town, the harbor, the summit-meeting house Höfdi and the House of Parliament.

Spend the rest of your day exploring Reykjavik – it is a vibrant small city with lots of charming cafes, shops, museums and galleries.  Start with a visit to the Whales of Iceland exhibition, featuring life size models of the whales that roam the Icelandic waters. This is also a great introduction to marine life if you are planning to go whale watching.

We would recommend going with our friends at Elding. With several daily departures, you can pick the time that suits you – use the code ‘Arctic’ when you book online at www.elding.is to obtain a 10% discount.

If the history of Iceland interest you – you shouldn’t miss the Saga Museum (only a 10-minute walk from the hotel or 5 minutes from the harbor). A wax museum with an audio guide included, it tells the often-violent history of Iceland in the Viking ages (NB! Not suitable for young children). If you are feeling peckish, the Saga Museum Café is also a great place for lunch with several local fish dishes on the menu.

Day 3

Today you will be joining the most popular tour in Iceland: The Golden Circle Tour. We start by traveling to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and arguably the most important site in Iceland in terms of history, culture, and geology.  The tour continues towards some of Iceland’s greatest natural attractions at Gullfoss Waterfall where you can walk up and feel the mist of glacial water on your face as it cascades down.

Our next stop is the Geysir geothermal area; an impressive sight featuring bubbling mud pools and hissing steam vents, and the home of Strokkur; a geyser that regularly blasts out a column of scalding water up to 20 metres into the air.  The tour moves on to Skálholt church that for 800 years was the religious and political center of Iceland.

Tonight, dinner is included at one of the oldest restaurants in town, Restaurant Reykjavik. We invite you to sample their famous Iceland Fish Buffet.

Day 4

Flight with Air Iceland from Reykjavik to Ilulissat.  Meet and greet by your guide.  Transfer to the hotel for check-in and information meeting where you will be introduced to the Arctic Adventure guide team and hear more about the optional day trips available.  Following the welcome meeting your guide will take you on a city walk so you can get acquainted with the town and get a first glimpse of the amazing country side.

Tonight, you will enjoy a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant ‘Ulo’ which specializes in fresh-from-the-fjords-and fells cuisine. Other local staples include seaweed, musk ox, Greenland halibut, and Greenlandic herbs.

Day 5, 6 and 7

Days at leisure in Ilulissat for optional excursions. There are several ways to explore the area – by boat, by foot or even flight seeing.  The guide team can advise you regarding tours and booking.

Talk to the guide team if you need advice on where to buy the best souvenirs.  A popular gift is a ‘Tupilak’ which in Greenlandic means ‘soul of the ancestor’ and is an Inuit version of a talisman/voodoo doll. Traditional tupilaks were sculpted into tiny creatures inspired by Inuit mythology.

Day 8

Farewell coffee at the hotel with your guide and a chance to talk about your experiences in Ilulissat. Transfer to the airport for your Air Iceland flight back to Reykjavik.  Transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Day 9

Transfer by FLYBUS to Keflavik Airport for your flight home. Be aware that you need to be in Keflavik Airport no later than 2 hours before your flight departs. Please seek advice from the hotel reception no later than the night before your departure regarding when your coach transfer should be booked.
